How Does Pilates Make You Stronger?
Pilates makes you stronger because you work with your own body resistance. You learn to move your body in the best way for you. Your body is not like everyone else’s so it probably doesn’t move exactly the same as everyone else. You may not even realize that there are some better ways to move your body. When you move your body in the best way for you, you can get more out of it.
For example, if you’ve always had a hard time with Push Ups, it might just be where you are placing your arms. A subtle change in your arms or how you balance your weight in the exercise can be the difference between struggling and striving. I’ve witnessed people that thought they couldn’t do a Push Up to save their life try one simple change and be able to do them in a way that they felt the challenge in a productive way. They were then able to do Push Ups, build up arm strength to do more, hold planks longer and even had less neck and shoulder pain. Now they have strong arms and visible muscles.
When movement is done well, you don’t have to do as many reps. Think about it, if you used your whole body to do three really good, challenging Push Ups, that would be quality movement. If you did 50 Push Ups with not so great form and got tired a third of the way through that would be quantity instead of quality. Why wear yourself out moving just to move when you could move with precision and feel energized instead of exhausted after a workout? You are busy and probably don’t get enough sleep. So which would you rather do, a workout that takes a lot of time and wears you out or one that works your whole body in 15-50 minutes leaving you refreshed and ready for the day?
Pilates helps you learn how your body works. How it does different things, like falling or sitting and standing. Those movements are things we practice in Pilates and doing them well becomes routine. You know that meme where someone injures themselves because they got out of bed? Pilates helps you move well so you can avoid injury and live a healthy, active life.
