Five Quick Tips to Overcome Writers Block
What is writers block? When the writing inspiration and the deadline do not line up. Writing is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. The more you do it the stronger you will be. There are times when the page stays blank and it’s hard to think about what to write or where to start. Here are my top five tips that have helped me to conquer the blank page.
Know what inspires you to write. If you start to pay attention to what is happening when inspiration strikes, you can often recreate the situation to receive inspiration again. My inspiration often occurs during movement. This can be taking a walk, doing or teaching Pilates, even just driving in the car. The more you feed your inspiration the more often it will show up. So know what inspires you, do it and use the inspiration.
Keep track of your ideas for a rainy day. I get inspired with writing topics often. I keep a list of topics in the free Evernote app on my phone. If I am lacking in inspiration I pick a topic and free write. I don’t always use the topic I started with but I often end up with something I can use.
Listen to music. I am also inspired by music and often listen to the same writing playlist when it’s time to sit down and write. I’ve been listening to the same writing playlist for almost twenty years. When I listen to this music my brain knows it’s time to write. Some people do better with instrumental music. Choose whatever inspires you and helps you to concentrate.
Let a picture or piece of art inspire you. I use this sometimes writing content for social media. This is especially helpful for Pilates content. Usually I will have the topic in mind first, but if I need some inspiration I let the picture tell me what to say.
Find what inspires you and make it a habit. Writing everyday is a good way to make yourself a great writer but doing things regularly that inspire you to write, whether it’s reading a book, going to a museum or meditating, make that part of your routine so that when the time comes to write you have something to write about.
