Change Can Be a Good Thing

How do you feel about change? Change has probably not been a choice for you recently. But that does not mean change has to be a bad thing. Sometimes change is scary. Sometimes we would rather stay in what we know doesn’t work because we are too afraid to be in the unknown. I know this because I’ve done it myself. But change can be helpful and welcome if you let it.

I ask questions when I get stuck in the midst of change. The doubt usually comes first. What if what you are try to do doesn’t work? Then I turn it around. What if you stay in what isn’t working? As a type A person that loves routine, I’ve had to practice a lot to be in a place where I can turn it around into a positive thing. Some of that practice happens while taking Pilates. One of the things I love about Pilates is that is helps you to venture into the unknown in a safe way. You practice trying things you don’t think you can do with your body and see that you can. You figure out what you can do well. And you learn to move through it.

Getting stuck and being complacent is easy. Getting unstuck takes courage. You have to be willing to try something different. Maybe it won’t work. But maybe it will. I've found a lot of answers by trying the things I didn’t think would work or that I wanted to do. I didn’t think I wanted to live in Nashville. I really didn’t think I wanted to teach Pilates. But I tried all of these things and they worked for me. If you don’t try you won’t know.

You can get yourself unstuck by figuring out what you need most. Ask yourself some questions:

What needs addressing right away? If you cut yourself and only had one bandage, you would put it where you were cut and bleeding, not where you just barely scraped your skin. Figure out what is the most important area of your life that you need to address first. Make a plan of action to deal with the most pressing thing first. I often start with mindset, as having a positive attitude helps everything work better.

What has worked for you in the past? Make a list of things that have helped you in this situation in the past. If you are trying to eat better, think about the the foods you ate that helped you feel energized and healthy. What kind of exercise did you enjoy? What do you miss from times in your life where you felt like you were on track with your health? Make a list of these things and see how you can put them back into your life.

What can you do with what you have? Once you know what you need and have a plan, figure out what you already have access to in order to work through your plan. You might have more resources than you think. If you give yourself a little time to think about what you have available you can make the best choices based on what you have available right now.
